And we're off
The brand new newsletter the ad-industry never asked for, but will love, if I have anything to say about it.
I told everyone I was going to write a book. Which apparently is a surefire way to never write a book. In advertising we complain a lot. We complain about the big guys, the little guys, the guys in general because eww. We complain about the clients and the lack of them, we complain when they don’t trust us and complain when we get caught acting shady as hell (present company excluded because, “I would never!”)
Anyway. I told people I was going to write a book because I heard so many people complaining that creative directors were just really good creatives that wanted more money but had no actual leadership skills. In hindsight, a series of TikTok videos could probably remedy that better than a 222 page hardback with a list price of 18.99.
I have a lot of big feelings knocking around inside me and apparently I have the kind of face that says, “Share your work trauma” because I’ve got a mind that I’m not the only one. And so, here we find ourselves, with the Substack nobody asked for. The one about advertising, and the things we are getting right and the things we are getting wrong. It’ll be half group therapy and half playing the violin on the Titanic and half speech delivered through a ladies room door before hitting the dance floor again. Don’t @ me about that math, I didn’t get into this industry because I’m a numbers person.
